When it began I was a free man

Free from all the heartaches of the past

I was alone travelling on my own

But open to a something that could last

But something new with a freedom lover too

With space and time for both of us to grow

She came along, as the subject of a song

And I felt she was the one, I had to know?

Through Summer, Autumn, Winter’s start

We were never far apart

But when in Spring we had to part

My head was singing to my heart

Chorus 1:

See you soon, see you summer time, maybe sometime in the future

And I thought that was the ending of our song

See you soon, see you summer time, maybe sometime in the future

But Summer she came back and proved me wrong

The second year I thought she’d disappear

I tried to let her go to find her way

Caught in between the two sides I had seen

But I really wanted both of them to stay

We shared a common fear

Of committing to appear

Like any couple holding dear

Our love in all her parting tears

Chorus 2:

See you soon, see you summer time, maybe sometime in the future

But once again I really wasn’t sure

See you soon, see you summer time, maybe sometime in the future

But once again she opened up her door

Instrumental

Four years went by, we talked and laughed and cried

And helped each other heal some childhood wounds

We were so close, together more than most

Opened to explore our hidden rooms

I knew that I could help her heal

But fell in love and couldn’t deal

With how the ending made me feel

When I knew she had gone and it was real

Chorus 3:

See you soon, see you summer time, maybe sometime in the future

And I never got the chance to say goodbye

See you soon, see you summer time, maybe sometime in the future

Until sometime in the future I could cry

But sometime in the future we all die

Until sometime in the future I could wait

But sometime in the future...

Is too late

Yeah sometime in the future is too late

The Story of 'Sometime In The Future'

the spiral of time into the future

Sometime in the past I realised that however much you try sometimes to write a "cool" song, sometimes they just don't come out that way. This one is a good example.

This is the type of song I would never normally listen to myself. It's very cliche in its chord structure, has sentimental and somewhat contrived and over dramatic lyrics and is generally very "cheesy". It's the kind of song Jim Steinman might have written (I can't stand his songs!) and that might have been sung by Bonnie Tyler with her big 80s hair!

I like what it's basically saying, but the way it's saying it I don't really... But this is how it came out and I've stopped trying to change songs to make them cool, because this is just how it goes, and I guess some people really like this kind of thing for some reason?! It's the kind of song I would give to someone else to sing and they could do a big corny production on it, and back in the 80s it may have done well ;)

But the subject matter is dear to my heart and very much based on real life events and actual experience. The title is actually from a text I got that really finished me off at the time, it was sooo deflating. I'd been waiting for months to see her following our break up, but that possibility kept getting pushed further and further back until finally I was told it would be "sometime in the future". What a let down...

Still, everything happens as it's meant to, and now I realise how much I learned from the whole experience.

When someone walks away let them go and move on. Don't wait around in limbo for ages hoping they might come back in some way, however much you may think that they want to make you think that that might happen! That's a long road to heartache and self abuse right there. Have some self respect and don't be the victim.

Because 'Sometime In The Future' IS too late.
